Controlled Screen Time
Not only does screen time compete for our attention—TV, tablet, phone, video games, computer—it’s proven to shorten our ability to stay engaged. Of course, it’s important to have a regimen to control access, but we want to encourage more than that: Explore the world around you.
6 Ways to Control Screen Time
01
Set a start and end time for screen time during the day. A screen time tracker can help identify how much time is spent, when, and what it’s spent on.
02
Establish “Blackout” times when no electronics are allowed (for anyone in the house, including parents) such as during meals, in the car, etc. Plan conversations during those times.
03
Monitor what your child is doing online. Parental controls can help, but it’s also important to talk about online activity with your child, too.
04
Write a contract with your child committing to a screen time limit and what they’ll do instead. Be sure to build in milestones and rewards.
05
06
Remove computers and smartphones from the child’s room at night.
